Rohith Vemula Suicide case which sparked protests and created a huge outrage across the Country has turned through a new twist. Rohith Vemula was a Ph.D. student at Hyderabad University and had committed suicide on 17  January. The case had attained media’s attention as an alleged case of Discrimination against dalit. And the case had led to an FIR being filed against Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya under the SC/ST Act and on charges of abetment to suicide. But now, the suicide case has taken a new twist and according to the preliminary investigation by Telangana Police, it is clearly stated that Rohith Vemula who committed suicide on 17th January 2016 was not a Dalit.

An Affidavit given by Telangana police to Hyderabad High Court on January 31, 2016, quotes that Rohith Vemula’s mother school records show her as Vaddera which is not a Dalit Caste.

So, if it is clear that Rohith was not a Dalit, no case can be filed under SC/ST atrocities act.
